John Greening was born 1771 Statesburg, SC  the son of Mason and Margaret (Haynsworth) Greening of Sumter District, SC.  
His wife, Mary "Polly" Whitehead, born  1775, MECKLENBURG CO., VIRGINIA, was the daughter of Benjamin and Mary Elizabeth (Swepson) Whitehead of  Lunenburg & Mecklenburg Counties, Va. 

This couple married in South Carolina CA 1796. At this time, marriage licenses were not required to be filed with the court in South Carolina,  so there has been no record found of their  actual marriage date

JOHN GREENING WAS A JUSTICE OF THE QUORUM, Sumter District, S. C. and a large land owner &  planter..
He  died in 1817, Sumter Dist., SC.  In  Dec, 1818, (Deed Rec'd Jany, 1819) ,  the Greening family sold their plantation in Sumter, SC & Mary (Whitehead) Greening and her children relocated to  Dallas, Baldwin & Conecuh Counties   Alabama, where she married her widowed bro-in-law JOHN GAYLE Prior to 1823.  John Gayle died, fall of 1828 , Wilcox Co., Ala.
In 1847 Mary Whitehead Greening, Gayle removed to Desoto Parish, La. with some of her children, where she died after 1860.

John Greening was too young to serve in the American Revolution, as some researchers claim.  The John Greening who served from Virginia (2nd Va.) was son of Robert Greening, Sr &  Sarah Dowell of Albemarle Co.  He also had brothers James & Nehemiah, who served in the American Revolution from Albemarle Co, Va. , later migrating to Kentucky. KNOW ALL MEN by these presents that I JOHN GREENING of Claremont County in the State aforesaid, in consideration of the sum of nine Negro Slaves in hand paid and delivered unto me and also the sum of twenty-five pounds Sterling in hand also paid me by WILLIAM MAYRANT, JOHN MAYRANT and ISABELLA his wife,  have granted, bargained, sold and released and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell, alien and release unto WILLIAM MAYRANT upon such certain uses and trusts as are hereinafter mentioned, that is to say, TO AND FOR THE USE OF THE SAID JOHN MAYRANT AND ISABELLA, his wife, during their natural lives, then to the children of the said JOHN & ISABELLA, his wife, to them and their heirs forever, ALL these five tracts of land lying and being in the County & State aforesaid, containing in the whole Eight Hundred and Fifty Acres, to wit: two tracts of Land originally granted to MASON GREENING, containing two hundred Acres each, also two tracts of Land originally granted to MOSES KNIGHTON, one of which contains one hundred Acres and the other tract contains two hundred Acres; also one other tract containing one hundred and fifty acres, originally granted unto MATTHEW PATTERSON, all which said Tracts of Land are adjoining and contiguous to each other. Together with all and singular the rights, members, heriditaments and appurtenances, to the said premises belonging or in any wise incident or appertaining,, TO HAVE AND TO HOLD all and singular the premises before mentioned unto the said WILLIAM MAYRANT for the TRUSTS AND USES HERETOFORE MENTIONED and I do hereby bind myself, my heirs. John Ramsay v. Willis Ramsay etal - Bill. Arbitrators made the following award.
We have considered all the claims made by John Ramsay against the personal estate of Willis Ramsay deceased which came into the hands of W. Ramsay the surviving administrator of the estate, and for his share of one seventh part of the negroes we do award him the sum of $883 to be paid out of the estate. All the claims of the estate against said John Ramsay are considered as discharged by this award, and all his claims to any of the property claimed by the said administrator as part of the Estate are also discharged. In this award is not included any claim John Ramsay has for a share of Allen Ramsay's estate. The Negroes in the hands of the other heirs which belonged to Willis (page 260) Ramsay deceased are bound for payment of this award.

John Ramsay v. Willis Ramsay Admr. A. Ramsay - Report confirmed. Ordered that the said John Ramsay do recover from the said Willis Ramsay, Administrator, the sum of $381.16 with interest from 20 Feb. 1815.

We being well acquainted with the situation of the three Tracts of Land mentioned in said Writ and perceiving the inconvenience that would arise to the heirs from a division of said land, on account of the smallness of the respective shares, recommend that the whole of the three tracts (with the exception of the Widow Mrs. Elizabeth Ramsay's portion of the tract of 500 acres) be sold at public auction on a credit of one, two and three years with interest from day of sale.

Thursday 22nd Feb, 1816
 p.9 John Ramsay v. Willis Ramsay etal - Bill. This case concerned a 75-acre tract of land held by the defendants as being purchased out of the funds of the Estate of Willis Ramsay. The case had previously been arbitrated by Reuben Long and Richard Moore who stated in their award "that all the claims of the said Estate against John Ramsay are considered as discharged by this award." John Ramsay had accounted for all that he received from the Estate. The defendants contended that the 75 acres had been purchased with funds from the estate, but the arbitrators stated that that was taken into consideration in John Ramsay's accounting of the funds of the Estate. The Court ordered the defendants to put the complainant in possession of the 75 acres.

Bequeath unto my sons, as follows:  Wade Horace Greening, Eldridge Swepson Greening, and John James Greening , when either marries or arrives to the age of twenty-one years old, three Negroes between the age of twelve and twenty years, good horse and saddle, three cows and calves, bed and furniture to each.

ITEM:  I will and bequeath unto my son Rufus William Greening, four Negroes between the age of twelve and twenty years old, two of which Negroes I wish to (be) boys  and bound with him to what trade he may best like at the age of seventeen, and be his at twenty one years old which will be the time of his freedom, good horse and saddle, three cows and calves, bed and furniture, all to be delivered at the time he is twenty one years old or marries.

ITEM:  I will and bequeath unto my daughter,  Elizabeth Ann Greening, when she marries or arrives at the age of eighteen years old, three Negroes between the age of twelve and twenty  years old, a good horse, three cows and calves, bed and furniture.

ITEM:  I will and bequeath unto my daughter, Mary Whitehead Greening, when she. arrives to the age of fifteen years old three Negroes between the age of twelve and twenty years old, a good horse, three cows and calves, bed and furniture.

ITEM:  I will and bequeath unto my daughter, Amanda Poleen Greening, three Negroes between the age of twelve and twenty years old, horse, three cows and calves, bed and furniture.

ITEM;  It is my will and desire that in case my wife should be pregnant at the time of my death, that the child shall share equal, with Wade, Eldridge, John, Elizabeth, Mary and Amanda Greening, both of real and personal property.

ITEM:  It is my will that all my lands in this State be sold for the purpose of paying my debts and that a tract at the discretion of my Executors be bought for the use of my family and to work my Negroes on until my daughter Mary Whitehead Greening becomes fifteen years old then those that have not received their Legacy as above named to receive it and the remainder to be equally divided amongst my children without a sail of the personal property.

ITEM:  Should my wife marry, it is my will that she receive Sarah, July and Milly, horse  - chair, bed and furniture in lieu of Dower.

ITEM:  It is my desire that should my Executors, after selling my lands, find it actually necessary to dispose of more property for the purpose of paying my just debts that they sell Martin, a Blacksmith, Long Bob, and wife, Abigail.

ITEM:  My will is that my property be kept together for the supporting of my family and educating my children until any may marry then they may receive their Legacy and have no further support from the Estate until the final division when all the last must be sold and divided amongst my children equal.

LASTLY, I do will. Ordain and Constitute my beloved wife, Mary Greening, Executrix during her widowhood. Wade H. Greening and Clark Taylor, in Georgia, my Lawful Executors of this my Last Will and Testament.

In witness where unto I set my hand and seal this the seventh day of October in the Year of Our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifteen.

Richardson's land .on the West & NW on A. GIBHEART'S the Estate of P. MELLET'S and Charles Conyers' lands, and on the North West by Charles Conyers' land, originally granted to JOHN GREENING for Four Hundred and one Acres, on the 2nd day of August, one thousand eight hundred and two, and hath such shape, marks, buttings and boundings as will appear by a plat of the same hereunto annexed Together with all and singular the premises .before mentioned, unto the said CHARLES CONYERS his heirs and assigns, forever. GREENING, the sworn Executrix and Executor of the last will and testament of JOHN GREENING, Deceased, late of the District and State aforesaid, for and in consideration of the sum of Two Hundred and fifty dollars to us paid the said Executrix and Executor, by JESSE NETTLES, SENIOR, of the District and State aforesaid, have granted, bargained, sold and released and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell and release unto the said JESSE NETTLES, SENR., all that plantation or tract of land, containing one hundred &  fifteen acres situate in the District and State aforesaid, on the East side of Nasty branch waters of Black River, it being part of a tract of land originally granted to SAMUEL HELTON for six hundred and forty acres, and hath such shape, forms and marks, buttings and boundaries the plat hereunto annexed represents, certified by W. L. Brunson, Depy.
