William Whitehead was born about 1772, in Mecklenburg Co., VA.  He was the son of Benjamin & Mary Elizabeth (Swepson) Whitehead).  William Whitehead was still living in Mecklenburg Co, Va. as of 1793, when he witnessed the will of Richard Witton, Jr.  and was security on the marriage bond of his sister Nancy when she married John Gayle. By the late 1790's he and his sisters Nancy (Whitehead) Gayle & Mary (Whitehead) Greening were in Sumter Dist., SC which is probably where William married  Elizabeth Harvin,, daughter of John Harvin and his first wife Mary Gayle. Elizabeth Harvin was b. abt 1784 in SC.

The Whitehead-Harvin  marriage is proven by the will of Elizabeth's father, John Harvin.  His will also indicates that the Whiteheads were living in Edgefield County, SC by 1805.  They later moved to Monroe County, AL, where  William Whitehead died about 1841.

William & Elizabeth Harvin Whitehead had at least 5 sons, acc to census records:

HANDBOOK OF TEXAS ONLINE

WOOD, GEORGE TYLER (1795-1858). George Tyler Wood was a soldier, a state legislator, and the second governor of the state of Texas. According to family tradition, he was born at Cuthbert, now in Randolph County, Georgia, on March 12, 1795. In 1814 he raised a military company that fought at the Creek Indian War battle of Horseshoe Bend in Alabama. According to tradition, Wood met Sam Houston and Edward Burlesonqv at this battle. After the Creek War Wood engaged in the mercantile business in Cuthbert. He was a member of the Georgia legislature from 1837 to 1838. On September 18, 1837, he married a widow, Martha Evans Gindrat, the mother of three children. Another child was born before the family moved to Texas. On February 16, 1839, Wood chartered the sloop Marshall to bring his family, slaves, and household equipment from Apalachicola Bay to Texas. The family settled at Point Blank on the Trinity River, in what is now San Jacinto County, then part of Liberty County. Here Wood managed a plantation and ran a mercantile business. He represented Liberty County in the Texas legislature in 1841 and at the Convention of 1845.qv. He was a state senator in 1846 and chairman of the first state Democratic convention in 1848. He studied law and was admitted to the bar.

Wood resigned from the Texas Senate in 1846 to raise a company of mounted volunteers for the Mexican War.qv.  He was colonel of the Second Texas Mounted Volunteers from July 4 to October 1, 1846, when the regiment was dissolved by order of Gen. Zachary Taylor.qv Wood served with distinction at the battle of Monterrey but became involved in a controversy with Governor J. Pinckney Henderson,qv who had taken leave of the governor's office to command the regiment, over conduct of the battle. The controversy apparently aided Wood in 1847 when he campaigned for and was elected governor, defeating James B. Miller, Nicholas Darnell, and Jesse J. Robinson.qv Wood took office as governor on December 21, 1847. His administration devoted much time to the debt question, frontier defense, and the New Mexico boundary dispute. Wood was defeated by Peter Hansborough Bellqv in his bid for reelection in the fall of 1849. Wood's defeat was due in large measure to his failure to resolve the New Mexico dispute and to the strong opposition of anti-Houston forces in the state, who viewed Wood as a Houston man. He was again defeated in a bid for reelection in 1853. Wood accepted defeat gracefully and retired to his plantation home on the Trinity. He undertook to build a large home two miles from the river on what he considered more healthy ground, but died at his home on September 3, 1858, before it was completed. His wife, mother, and three children were buried near him on the grounds of their first plantation in what became known as Robinson graveyard, near Point Blank. Some disagreement exists over Wood's middle name. Early accounts listed it as Tyler, but the monument erected at his grave gives the name as Thomas. Wood County and Woodville, the county seat of Tyler County, are named for him.

*John Gayle, above, is married to Nancy Whitehead, sister to William whitehead.

John Harvin was born CA1755 & died in Edgefield Co., SC. His Will was proved in 1806. He was married twice, first to Mary Gayle, Daughter of Josiah Gayle Sr. who d. 1794 Sumter, SC, secondly to Rebecca (Cantey) Gayle, widow of his brother-in-law Josiah Gayle Jr, who was hanged by the British in 1780. (See the Will of Josiah Gayle Sr  -Below-- which also mentions another child of  John Harvin by his first marriage  - John Harvin Jr.)
There has been some question as to which of John Harvin's wives was the mother of Elizabeth (Harvin) Whitehead.  The use among her Descendants of  Gayle  as a given name, as well as the use of a somewhat  unusual given name that was common to this Gayle family (''Celsus")  are compelling  evidence that Elizabeth was  the daughter of John &  first wife Mary (Gayle) Harvin.

Obit of  "James Barlow"
husband of Rebecca Harvin; son of Thomas Barlow and Elizabeth Roscoe
Issue: November 01, 1855 Page 175 Column 4

"Died, of Typhoid Fever, at his residence in Laurens County, on the 19th of September, and twentieth day of his illness. James Barlow was aged 64 years, 7 months and 1 day.

Seldom has it been the lot of any one to record a death which has been more widely felt or more deeply lamented than that of brother Barlow. He was a native of Edgefield District S.C., came to Georgia in the 21st year of his age, and settled in Laurens County on the very plantation on which he died.

In 1826 he connected himself with the Baptist church at Rocky Creek and was baptized by Reverend John Ross, in July of that year. In August he had the happiness to see his beloved wife follow his Divine Master in the ordinance of baptism, and in September he was elected Deacon; an office which he filled with honor till the day of his death.

His lot on earth, though prosperous so far as temporal things are concerned, was not without its trials and afflictions. He lived to mourn the loss of two, amiable companions (with the former of whom he lived past 20 years, and with the latter 20 years, 2 months and some days) and of seven children, three of whom had arrived at the years of maturity yet he bore his trials with …

As a father, he was singularly blessed in his family. Of nine children who reached maturity he lived to see all but one become members of the church, and all become honorable respected, and ___ members of the community."
