For several years these graves were maintained by Mr. Wilburt Bernshouse, whose father built  the surrounding wall of this cemetery containing these graves in 1925. Mr. Bernshouse and the two graves were featured in an article " Sumter Genealogical Society goes in search of Hallowed Ground" written by Jack Cooksey, and printed in the June 27, 1996 Panorama Section of the newspaper in Sumter, SC.
This cemetery was located by Mr. Bernshouse, with the assistance of the State Forestry Commission.

I wish to express my deep appreciation to Paul & Carol Boring, whose work and dedication to this project made these pictures of the final resting places of Thomas Brumby and wife, Susannah Greening Brumby,  possible for us all to enjoy-Sadie Greening Sparks

Thomas Brumby was educated in England; received appointment by Pres. Thomas Jefferson as Surveyor of Port of Charleston which office he held from 1803-1807; He was also a carpenter, planter and a large landowner.

Departed this life, on the 19th inst., at the residence of her son-in-law, J. Denson in Pickens county, Ala., in the 67th year of he rage, Mrs. Susanna Brumby, relict of the late Thomas Brumby , of South Carolina, and mother of Professor R. Brumby, of the University of Alabama. Her disease from which she was closely confined to her bed for about six weeks, was for the pulmonary character; and although she appeared to suffer much at times, during her illness, yet she bore it all with much patience and Christian fortitude, and would talk as pleasantly about her approaching dissolution, to Mrs. Denson (her daughter) as she usually did about the common occurrences of life. A few days before her death, she related to Mrs. Denson that she had recently enjoyed a glorious manifestation of divine goodness, in which she viewed plainly with an eye of faith, her full acceptance with the Saviour. She had been a member of the Baptist Church of Christ about thirty years having at first united with that Church at Bethel, Sumter District, SC; (my note: also called Black River Baptist Church organized in 1760 and mother of the High Hills Baptist Church) but at the time of her death her membership was in the church in Tuskaloosa. The deceased was the mother of eight children, and was permitted to live to see them all hopefully converted to the faith of our blessed Saviour. Her remains were deposited in the burying ground at Enon meeting house. Pickens county, there to rest until the morning of the resurrection. -PICKENSVILLE REGISTER (AL) August 27, 1842.(Courtesy Jacki Pierandri)

State of South Carolina, Sumter District

In the Name of God, Amen, I, Thomas Brumby, Planter, of Claremont County and State and District aforesaid, being weak of body but sound of mind (and) memory and understanding, My praise be to God for the same, I do make this my last Will and Testament, in manner and form, following:

I will that my Estate be kept together and not divided until the first day of January, in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Eighteen, except my lands, which I will and empower my Executors and Executrix, hereafter named, to sell by private contract, any tract or tracts of my lands, both for the purpose of paying my just debts and purchasing Negroes for my estate and to make good and sufficient titles for the same-except one tract of land, which I will to my beloved wife Susannah Brumby, in lieu of her dower, which tract of land I do not name, but will that my beloved wife Susannah Brumby may choose any tract
of land belonging to my estate; the same being for the use of herself and my children while they remain with her; and then to remain my beloved wife's during her life and at her death to revert to my children.

Should my beloved wife choose the tract of land that I now live on, it must include one half of a tract of land I bought from John Dinkins, and a tract of land that I bought from Isham Moon which lands join and are included in the plantation I now live on.  I further Will that should my beloved wife choose any particular tract of land and wish to exchange it for another tract of land during her being an Executrix, until a final division of my Estate takes place, that she, my beloved wife, Susannah Brumby has full and sufficient power to do so.

I further Will in lieu of dower to my beloved wife Susannah Brumby, when my Estate is divided, to be hers forever, at her own disposal, her choice of my beds and furniture; say one feather bed , bedstead, and bed
furniture,  with all the remaining part of my household and kitchen furniture (except the remaining part of my bedding).

I further Will to my beloved wife Susannah Brumby, in LIEU of her dower, to be hers forever, at her own disposal, when my Estate is divided, one third part of the remaining part of my Personal Estate, except such
Negroes as may be purchased for my Estate by my Executors or Executrix, with money arising from the sale of lands belonging to my Estate, after my decease.

I further Will that the remaining part of my bedding as mentioned above be kept together for the use of my small children or such part of it as may be thought necessary.

I further Will that the remaining two thirds of my personal property, with all the Negroes, which may be purchased by my Executors or Executrix with money arising from the sale of lands of my Estate with all my Real Estate which may not be sold before the Division of my Estate takes place, be equally divided between my seven children, or as many as I may have at my decease; or in case any of them should die to be equally divided between my surviving children; though should any of my children marry and die before my Estate is divided, and leave lawful issue then their children shall be entitled to their Father's or Mother's share of my Estate.

I further Will  that should my beloved wife, Susannah Brumby, be pregnant at the time of my decease, then that child be entitled to an equal share with the rest of the children.

I further Will that should any of my children marry before my Estate is divided, that my Executors give to each of them after marriage, a Negro boy or girl between the age of twelve and twenty years old as soon as such Negro can be bought, if not in hand at the time.  Also, a horse, saddle and bridle, to be given out of money arising out of the sale of lands and to be valued and deducted from the said child's part; also, the bed and furniture to be valued and deducted from the said child's part of my Estate when my Estate is divided.

I further Will that when my Estate is divided that my sons not to take in their possession their part of my Estate until they arrive at twenty-one years old, and that my daughters do not receive their share until they marry or arrive at the age of eighteen years old, and that until they arrive to this age, that their property and themselves continue in the care and under the direction of my Executors and Executrix.

I further Will and request that my Executors pay particular attention to the education of my children.

Lastly, I do Will, Ordain, and Constitute Reubin Long, JOHN GREENING, CHARLES MILLER, and Matthew Moon my lawful Executors, and my beloved wife, SUSANNAH BRUMBY, my lawful Executrix during her Widowhood.
