The following has been copied from the Orangeburg Co., SC Gen Web pages (Shuler Family):

"Hans Joerg Shuler (Jr.) also married a German girl in about 1723: Catherina Anna
Margaretha Hesse, who was born about 1695 in Germany. She was known in the
States as just Ann Margaret. The Speyer Archives also sent the names of Jacob's
and George's children who were born in Germany, and their baptism dates.

In the Register Zweibrucken III No. 2025, for the year 1737, is the following
remark: "Jakob Schuler of Krahenburg (Germany) moved to Carolina with wife
and eight children." (Christening records from Germany indicate that Jacob
had nine daughters and one son, but two of these died before the family left
Germany, and three more died shortly after arriving in America. He had only five
daughters who reached adulthood). Another entry from the Register for the year
1736 was, "Hans George Schuler of Waldmohr (Germany) moved to America."
(Christening records from Germany indicate that George had four children: two
sons and two daughters. There may have been others who were christened elsewhere,
and more children were probably born after the family came to America, of which
we have no record). George and Jacob Schuler's younger brother, Hans Heinrich (Henry)
and his wife Juditha, had also lived in Germany and then moved to America,
although no record of their residence in Germany has yet been found, and it is
not known what year they came over.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF ORANGEBURG
by Hugo S. Ackerman (IN PART)
"Orangeburg, a beautiful and robust city, is steeped in history which helped mold the destiny of both our State and Country. Memorable events have taken place here which were important in the development of America from its earliest beginnings.

To encourage settlement into the Carolina interior, the General Assembly in 1730 established eleven townships of 20,000 acres each along the banks of the chief rivers, including the Pon Pon or Edisto. Orangeburgh township was given its name by Lieutenant Governor Thomas Broughton, who named it in honor of William IV, Prince of Orange the husband of Princess Anne, daughter of George II of England. There were, however, already a few settlers in the new township. (The "h" in the original spelling was due to German influence; its use, however, gradually declined, ending unofficially with the Constitution of 1868, when Districts became Counties.)

Although much is known about the German-Swiss who arrived in three groups1 in 1735, 1736, and 1737, there is much less information about the scattered settlers who were already in the district. Old land plats, however, show that George Sterling secured a grant of land as early as 1704; Richard Heatley about 1719 at Santee (his son William born in 1719 was probably the first white child born in Orangeburg County); Moses Thomson in 1730; John Hearne in 1732 (the first settler in the Orangeburg area); and Henry Salley in 1735. These were casual settlers; far different were the plans for settlers expected for the new township.

A copy (dated 1833) of an old plat of Orangeburg shows the center of the village located not on Russell Street as today but on N. Broughton Street in the vicinity of its intersection with Waring Street. Here was the Public Square that served as a parade ground for the local militia; the tiny stream or "branch" which crossed the Square in 1735 still flows today. Adjacent to the Square and on the southeast corner was the site of the first church and graveyard which now face Bull Street.

While several names of streets on the plat layout have been changed, others remain the same. Broughton, the center street of those running approximately north and south, was named for Lt. Gov. Thomas Broughton. The first street east of Broughton was called Middleton for Arthur Middleton, a member of His Majesty's Council. And one block west of Broughton was Windsor, named for Windsor township on the Savannah River.

Parallel to Waring (originally Broad), which ran east and west and was named in honor of Thomas Waring, was Bull Street, named for William Bull, also a member of the Council. One block north of Russell was Amelia, named for Amelia Township, so called in honor of the Princess Amelia, another daughter of George II. Russell Street was named in honor of Capt. Charles Russell, commander of a fort on the Congaree River and of the Rangers, who protected settlers from both Indians and outlaws. Thus, the town was laid out, the streets named, and only the settlers were lacking.

The first organized movement of settlers to the Orangeburg district began in 1735 with the arrival of 220 German-Swiss, who were reported by the Charlestown Gazette (July 26) to be going up the Edisto at government expense with provisions for one year. Each family head was to receive a town lot and fifty acres in the township for each member in the family. Inevitably, these Europeans, in a strange land, must have been fearful of Indians.
Fortunately the few Indians in the Orangeburg district were friendly. Others, passing through on trading trips to Charles Town, were usually Cherokees or their allies, who camped along the banks of the Edisto, known to them as the Pon Pon or "black" river. Arrowheads and pieces of pottery have been found in fields usually not far from the river, where Indians had been camping for centuries. In years to come Christopher Rowe was to operate profitably a trading post on the "square," where he traded with Indians for peltries. According to William Gilmore Simms, when drunken Indians could not otherwise be quieted, Rowe "did not scruple to soothe them down with an oaken towel" (cudgel). Such high jinks no doubt supplied rare entertainment for the "lads of the Edisto" but were more often a source of anxiety for older citizens, who relished less the grotesque dancing and drunken disorder of Orangeburg's wild visitors. But who were these "older" citizens who preferred order to the threat of drunken Indians?
the first congregation was Lutheran2 with many being influenced by the teachings of Calvin and Zwingli. In 1750, however, the congregation was led into the Church of England by the Rev. John Giessendanner, who had gone to London to be ordained as a minister in that faith. Some occasional "back-sliding" and disorders during the early years were more than balanced by the many commendable traits of the German-Swiss settlers.

For example, in their relations with those about them they were generally peaceful as well as patient; their thrift and industry made the Orangeburg district a very prosperous one. Farmers were soon producing increasing quantities of grain, upland rice, and indigo. With cattle and sheep plentiful, there were cow-pens scattered throughout the district. Farmers were also supplementing income by shipping logs and lumber down the Edisto. Differences with the mother country and divisions at home, however, were to bring a sudden and painful halt to the progress of the entire township."
